The Pumpkin Patch

It’s been quite a while since I’ve been to a pumpkin patch… The majority of my childhood memories consist of cloudy and misty hayrides, picking apples straight from the trees, scouting out the largest pumpkin that I could lift (if you couldn’t carry it, you couldn’t have it) and then heading back to the farmstand for freshly baked apple cider donuts and a piping hot mug of mulled cider to warm up with. Childhood in the Midwest was very blessed.
am4After a gorgeous three mile hike on Saturday morning, we stopped by the Rocky Mountain Pumpkin Ranch to pick up some pumpkins for carving and waded through crowds of parents and toddlers…
am5Pony rides, petting zoos…
am6A scarily unstable ferris wheel…
am7…and plenty of face painting booths and corn stalk mazes. Luckily, we escaped unscathed, with pumpkins and caramel corn to boot.
am8After all the stress of the crowds, and since we were in Longmont, we figured a stop by Left Hand Brewing was in order!
am9Two taster flights with some of my favorites: Ambidextrous #5 – an amazing doppelsticke alt with a wonderful malt backbone and just enough hops to give it a bite, and Black Jack Porter.
am3I’d had this for the first time on Friday night and fell in love – warm and toasty with rich notes of dark chocolate and just a hint of coffee with a crisp and refreshing hop end. An easy drinker and a new favorite.
am13We got those pumpkins carved – Mine is a beer bottle pouring into a beer glass… One track mind, I know. I also happened to receive tickets from some very generous neighbors to the Eagles game in Loveland!
am11I went with my friends Andrew and Alex. Amazing seats.
am12It’s hard to follow a game when you have no idea who any of the players are. It was still a fun time, and since I happen to have a handful of tickets for the rest of the season thanks to said generous neighbors, I can’t wait to go back and start learning each and every player and taking a break from my impending employed life. Details coming soon!
am10Bonus: the event center where the Eagles play happens to feature quite a few local brews! I’m looking forward to plenty of barbecue binges (oooooh, the brisket!) at Nordy’s just down the road, followed by overpriced brews at the stadium from places like Loveland Aleworks, Grimm Brothers and Odell Brewing.

Bonus #2: The Colorado Avalanche won AGAIN last night! Have I mentioned how much I love it here? I can’t get over how wonderful this state is!

What are your pumpkin/Halloween/autumn traditions?

Hike, Rehydrate, Refuel

I can’t get over it. My town. Yesterday morning, I went on a six mile hike through Devil’s Backbone and was rewarded with amazing views and achy legs. And we spotted a missing black llama that the rangers told us to keep an eye out for. That was weird.
am12It was wonderfully chilly. I love cloudy days.
am10My spastic hiking buddy. He got so dusty I had to bathe him after and the water was pink.
am11Streaks of red rocks as far as the eye can see.
amI’ve found that beer is a great way to rehydrate after long hikes. I visited Loveland Aleworks to try their cask Premium English Bitter – smooth and creamy, served at the perfect cellar temperature with soft notes of biscuit and a nice hint of herbal hops on the nose. Very delicious. And hydrating.
am1To celebrate GABF week they gave away a pint glass to the first 20 people to order a beer on Wednesday.
am3Boom. Free glass! My cabinets are overflowing with glassware, but I can never turn down repping local.
am2Each day they’ve been releasing a new beer.
am4I got a taster of the Abbey Grand Cru – 9%ABV, full of rich raisiny flavor, roast and toffee with a hint of alcohol warmth. It’s an easy drinker, so beware all you bikers and drivers who are lucky enough to snag some before it’s gone!
am8After Loveland Aleworks I went on a happy hour date with my mumsie! Now that we live in the same state again, it’s been wonderful to get some girl time in. We stopped by Next Door down the main street in Loveland and started off with a Not the Irish red ale from Verboten Brewing.
am5Braised short rib pintxos with pickled onion, cotija cheese and au jus. Holy heaven.
am6This could honestly be my last meal on earth and I’d be happy – fall-apart tender short ribs topped with salty cotija cheese, sweet pickled onions which balanced the umami of the dish perfectly, and a dash of spicy horseradish to finish. Mumsie got the vegan quinoa mushroom burger with a side salad. I stole of a bite of hers. I may have forgotten to offer to share mine…
am7We finished it off with another vegan surprise – chocolate coconut mousse drizzled with coconut rum caramel. Needless to say, we lingered for a while in our seats by the window watching the hanging lights began to illuminate as the sun slowly set before waddling back to the car and driving home in a food coma. It was so worth it.

This morning I’m headed down to Denver for the Pink Boots Society meeting! Unfortunately I wasn’t planning on living in Colorado at the time tickets went on sale, so I’ll be missing out on the full GABF experience until next year. Le sigh. Luckily I still get to rub elbows with all the ladies of beer and see some of my favorite Cali brewers! Happy Friday!

My Little Town

My little town is wonderful. As are all the towns around it. Since moving here, I’ve been exploring every nook and cranny and loving it.
amA shared flight at Verboten Brewing in Loveland.
am2Vegan nachos with cashew cheese at Tasty Harmony in Fort Collins.
am10I found this 2009 (!!!!) Angel’s Share in the local liquor store, just chillin’ there, waiting for someone to realize its worth. That baby went straight to the cellar after the moths fluttered out of my wallet.
am9A flight at City Star Brewing in Berthoud.
am5Motorcycling around town and through the backcountry and mountains. Happiness.
am1The simple things like being home on a cold and rainy day with a blazing fire and a glass of pumpkin ale.
am3Sleepy puppy on the drive home from a playdate with his brother.
am6Sleepy puppy still worn out from playing with dogs three times his size.
am7Awake puppy interested in a perry.
am13New camera lenses.
am11Hockey season! I was a diehard Colorado Avalanche fan for years when I lived here before, and now that I’m back, I’m diving in headfirst.
Screen shot 2013-10-09 at 8.29.34 AMI most definitely got that “Guys Night Out” deal. Avs vs. Red Wings with a beer and t-shirt? Give me the worst seat possible, I wouldn’t miss that game for the world! Now I just have to figure out where I packed my fake mustache. And no, I’m not kidding.
am14I’ve found that the best way to truly enjoy a hockey game is with my Pumpkin Mac ‘n Cheese. With bacon. Bacon makes the world go round.
am15My new camera bag I found at Jax! After my stupid Nikon bag buckles broke and dropped by beloved camera to the ground, I’ve been in search of something more secure. While this Kavu bag isn’t technically made for cameras, it happens to fit a camera and two lenses in two separate compartments with foolproof zippers.
am16And the strap is made of climbing rope. Awesome. I think I’m in love.

What’s your favorite part of your little town?

One Week In

Happy Labor Day to all! I’ve officially lived in Colorado for a week now, and holy geez, has it been busy! Here’s a quick recap of some highlights.
amMy latest obsessions – iced Bhakti Chai almond milk latte and Ambidetrous #5 dopplesticke altbier (SO GOOD!) from Left Hand Brewing. We stopped at Cranknstein (soon to be one of my regular hangouts) in Fort Collins on our way to the Tour de Fat, and in order to comply with Tour de Fat tradition, both caffeine and beer were required. Cranknstein has both, therefore, I love them.
am1We missed the parade but went to the Civic Center Park to enjoy some music and check out everyone in costume.
am2Halloween 2.0.
am3It was a rowdy bunch with plenty of hollering Chivers stumbling about and scantily clad college kids on bikes.
am4The lines were ridiculously long for beers, so we headed over to Black Bottle Brewery a little out of town for lunch and There Goes the Neighborhood rye saison – earthy, perfectly barnyard funky with a wallop of spiciness from the rye. I need to get one of these mustache glasses!
am5The rest of the week has been in the same vein. We headed to High Hops Brewery in Windsor and enjoyed a cloudy afternoon overlooking the hop farm and mountain range. Afterwards, my bro and sister-in-law kidnapped me and forced me to drink delicious homebrew, eat sushi and talk everything beer. Those two can be pushy…
am6In between all the brews, I’ve attempted to keep my diet somewhat balanced. Chopped salads with sauteed zucchini, bell pepper, carrots and black bean dressing (recipe to come).
am7Homemade indian food was also necessary. I chopped up eggplant, zucchini, onions and bell peppers, marinated them in olive oil, balsamic vinegar and a healthy dose of garam masala and curry before slowly grilling them to caramelized perfection. Slow cooker chicken tikka masala and garlic naan joined the plate.
am9Every evening that hasn’t been dominated with new friends, steak and lobster dinners (which actually occurred last night) and beer tastings have been spent on the porch enjoying the sunsets and the warm end of summer.
am10Lightning storms and downpours over the mountains are a bonus.
am11Happy Labor Day, everyone! Go be lazy – you’ve earned it!

Sincerely, the Funemployed Becki.

The Last Day

Today is my last full day in California! Amidst the panic of last minute details and hoping that everything I own will somehow fit into my miniscule car, I’m thrilled beyond belief and can’t wait to close (and hopefully not have to strap down) the trunk of my car and get on the road!

I spent the past week saying wonderful and sad goodbyes to all of my favorite people and places. First up were the Ladies of Ladyface and a Vertical Epic tasting.
AM208.08.08 – Belgian Strong Pale Ale.
AM309.09.09 – Belgian Strong Dark Ale.
AM410.10.10 – Belgian Strong Pale Ale.
AM511.11.11 – Belgian Strong with chilies – This is still my favorite of them all. A hint of cinnamon and a lingering spice.
AM612.12.12 – Christmas in a bottle.
AM7We then moved on to my favorite in the Eclipse Series – Elijah Craig barrel aged imperial stout. The night was absolutely amazing and full of laughter, juggling, videos of juggling which I am saving for blackmail in the future, and tons of kraut and pizza.
AM8Without a doubt, the best way to spend my final Friday in California! I love you ladies!
AM10A hello and farewell to my roommate’s new puppy, The Dude! The only thing missing is a rug that really ties the room together.
AMOne last goodbye to the ocean and a visit to all of the artists I used to know while traveling on the gypsy circuit.
AM9A final lunchbeer at Golden Road Brewing with the pops who was in town for business!

I kept the camera stowed away for the week so I could fully enjoy the last experiences with close friends, but it’ll be logging the trip home and then joining me overseas! Keep in touch through Twitter and Facebook for trip updates over the weekend!

Cheers and farewell, California!

Unemployed!

Well, it’s done!
amI am officially unemployed! To celebrate I took myself out to Pedalers Fork for a little breakfast pampering and awesome coffee.
am2It is an absolutely GORGEOUS day, made even better by the fact that I am now one gigantic step closer to moving to Colorado! I sold my bed last night to someone on Craigslist (and lived to tell about it, which is a bonus), and walking into that almost-empty room made it seem real. I’m actually doing this!
am1I am excited beyond belief and also terrified. So terrified that I figured a little comfort food should be in order.
am3Fried egg sammich with ham and roasted potatoes on the side, basking in the warm glow of the sun shining through the skylights. Bliss.
am4And the most amazing coffee in the world by 10 Speed Coffee. I’ll miss them. I suppose I’ll have to get my delicious coffee fix from Cranknstein from now on 😀

For now, I’m off to pick up some Custom Pie and head over to the lovely Janelle’s house for a Vertical Epic series tasting, pizza, kraut and most of my Ladies of Ladyface. Happy Friday!

You Say Goodbye…

Now begins the final week of my employment in California! It’s a crazy thought, but I am so excited to get to my land of craft beer, flannel shirts and snowcapped mountains. I began my farewells last week.
amI started off at Story Tavern in Burbank with a Tarte Noir from Eagle Rock Brewery, and my friend from long ago, Yousef.
am11Blonde Becki, Jackson, Yousef, Lexie and Jess. We were on the internet series lonelygirl15 waaaaay back in 2007.
am10…which continued for a few years. Yousef was even kind enough to host/care for me on my 21st birthday. He stuck with me that night after a visit to Saddle Ranch, blue motorcycles and hiking around Hollywood. That’s the sign of a true friend.
am1Up next were my two favorite girlies. Janelle, Avery and I stopped by LAB Brewing to redeem a Living Social coupon and binge.
am2Augh, I’m going to miss these beauties so much!
am3I ordered the braised short ribs with mashed potatoes and was not disappointed at all. Fall-apart tender, dressed with a rich gravy on top of a soft bed of potatoes. I ate one of these rounds and got a box for the rest so I could enjoy even more.
am4Janelle showed me up by going healthy and got the sesame crusted seared ahi. I stole a bite and now have my sights set on recreating this.
am5I boxed half of my meal just so I would have space for this – peanut butter white chocolate puff pastry. This may be my favorite dessert of all time. Rich and thick chocolatey peanut butter filling cut by sweet vanilla ice cream and given a boost of antioxidants with fresh berries. Yeah, that’s how that works. We ended our evening with an Abyss clone that Janelle and her hubby aged in a barrel for four months. To. Die. For.
am7I also had some hello/goodbyes as well. I went to Island Brewing for a growler fill, got a wrist band slapped on my arm by a very generous friend at the brewery and went down to the Surf ‘n Suds beer festival that was happening across the railroad tracks. I finally got to meet Joseph, the new assistant brewer at Wolf Creek Brewery! Something tells me he has a slightly easier time hoisting the 55lb bags of grain into the mill than I did.
am8I finally finished the long trek up north to Santa Barbara and was greeted by Mangria – wine with orange liquer added and coming in at 20%. I sipped, wrinkled my nose and poured myself a glass of Jubilee Ale a la Island Brewing instead.
am9My boys! Matt and Grayson were my big brothers in college and took wonderful care of me and my roommates when we were freshman. They were also the bad influences, but they cared for us after those influences, and that’s what counts.
am6And we’ll end this with another hello! This is my new bow, yet to be named. She’ll be getting new limbs soon (they’re 35lbs right now and I pull 26lbs at the moment), and then will be making the trek cross country with me! I love her. I love her so.

And now I’m going to pour myself a Mission Street Brown Ale, serve up some lentil soup that’s been stewing away in the crockpot all day and fully soak in and appreciate my last few days as a California resident.

Life. Is. Good.

Two Weeks Notice

My life has been turned upside down. The past few months have been incredibly difficult for me, even though I’ve kept it light on the blog.

In the last few months I found out that someone I once considered a good friend was the exact opposite. Suddenly, I was no longer welcome into one of my favorite places where I’d enjoyed spending almost every day learning, helping, building. Because of this situation, I also lost my best friend, my appetite for over a week (disastrous for a food blogger) and way too much weight. Needless to say, it’s been a little rough.
amI booked a trip to Colorado for a quick escape when all of this went down.
am1I flew in over the mountains as the sun gently set, sipping on my complimentary gin and tonic and contemplating life.
am8The first morning I was greeted with a green monsta and one of the most amazing views available to man. The parentals and I decided to start off healthy since we had the Gnarly Barley beer festival to attend.
am2#42 Poblano Stout by Big Choice Brewing out of my old hometown, Broomfield. This was my favorite of the day.
am3I was pleasantly tipsy thanks to the altitude and the wide varieties of tasters we got to try, and we ended up leaving at the perfect time.
am4The storm wreaked havoc on the remaining hours of the festival. Tents were destroyed, tornado warnings blared and I enjoyed the torrential downpour from inside a cozy restaurant, eating deep fried food and sipping pale ale on nitro.

Sitting there, I finalized my decision that I’ve been contemplating for over two years. I’m moving to Colorado.

This morning I put in my two weeks notice at my job. My last full day in California will be August 23rd and then I’ll be journeying cross country in my Wheezy little car and embarking on an amazing adventure called life. The initiation into this new life will be a trip to Munich, Amsterdam AND Scotland!
am7Breakfast at my new favorite place – Rainbow Restaurant in Fort Collins. Pumpkin bread french toast with rum butter and caramelized bananas. The appetite has returned.
am5Celebration with Consecration. And now, to pack up my entire life and go back to where I belong, wearing jeans and flannel in the mecca of craft beer!

What I Really Eat

When I’m not shoving my face with work dinners and delicious local foods, I tend to keep the menu pretty tame. This was everything I consumed yesterday – please keep in mind that my kitchen is out of commission because of re-tiling and I’ve only had access to a microwave for the past week. Sad face.
am1/4 cup of oatmeal combined with 1/2 cup of water, microwaved for a minute with a pinch of Truvia added. Whee. Two huge cups of un-photographed coffee – WHEE!!!
am1That kept me stuffed for about an hour, then I went for the big guns – an apple. And this, my friends, is why I don’t show you my daily eats. They’re depressing and dull.
am2Those gigantic cups of coffee just weren’t quite enough caffeine, so I got my favorite tea in the entire world, jasmine green, to give me an extra boost of energy.
am3More computer and menu design for works, so I microwaved (ugh) a handful of frozen broccoli florets and two Trader Joe’s precooked turkey meatballs. I felt painfully stuffed after this menial dish. Honestly, this is how I eat. I’ll have a handful of food, be stuffed for about an hour and have to eat again. I believe I’m known as a “grazer”. I eat CONSTANTLY.
am4Lemon ginger tea was up for my post lunch snack, since I have no accessibility to a stove for my preferred edamame fix.
am6And the finale – my big meal of the day was kindly handcrafted for me by one of my best friends, Janelle. Seared ahi tuna, chiffoned zucchini salad with tomatoes, parmesan cheese, green onions and basil from her own garden, tossed in white balsamic. Oh Janelle, how I adore you, your perfect little girl and your cooking.
am5We topped this exquisite meal off with Mirassou Pinot Noir – one of the first red wines that I ever tried and appreciated.

I finished the night with a homebrew saison a la my roommate General Bird, and Sharknado. Screen shot 2013-07-18 at 9.29.44 PMI am an absolute nerd and would chainsaw my way out of a shark to proclaim that. There is no better way to end the week than with a so-bad-it’s-good SyFy film.

Cheers!

Parental Guidance

My parental unit came by this weekend for a visit from Colorado to spoil me rotten, so we hit up some of the necessary traditions.
am15Chicken Tikka Masala…
am14Baingan Bharta…
am13Saag Paneer. We’re huge Indian food fanatics, so every time we get together buffets are consumed at least once. At least.
amAfter a long weekend of wine tasting, feasting on the lake and attempting to keep cool in the 113 degree heat, we took a final visit to the beach for some ocean views – one thing they definitely don’t have in Colorado.
am0Pepperdine University has one of the most amazing ocean views around, plus cool breezes and 75 degree temperatures. It was a very appreciated breath from the heat wave we’ve been having.
Pepperdineam2Mumsie and me!
am3Me and my pops!
am5We headed back into the brutal heat for a final farewell breakfast at one of my new favorite spots, Pedalers Fork.
am6Brand new and beautiful inside, the only thing I could appreciate even more than the air conditioning is the decor. And people. And food. But, oh how I adore that A/C!
am7Pedalers Fork is a combination farm-to-table restaurant with a full lineup of beer and huge cocktail list, coffee shop and bike repair shop.
am8Even with the heat, I can’t pass up their amazing coffee that’s roasted in house – 10 Speed Coffee.
am9Mumsie ordered the vegan and gluten free Whitney Ranch Blueberry Johnny Cakes. Edible flowers included.
am11Pops went for the Spring Shakshouka with poached eggs in harissa broth. Random and delicious. I think he may have regretted the hot skillet after it began emanating waves of heat into his face, though.
am10I stuck with a classic – smoked turkey and avocado sammich with baby kale caesar salad and a nice tall pint of Enegren Captain’s Summer Session on the side.
stacheWe parted ways and I enjoyed some of the loot from my parental unit’s visit. Mustache hat with matching removable mustache. How could I not?

In other news – I’m headed back to Boston tomorrow for a week! Happy July!
